Practical planning

Most activities have a gentle version and a demanding one. Snowmobiling and ice fishing ask little; driving a husky team, snowshoeing a long route or a full day out are more physical. Tell us your group honestly and we will match the format to it.
Many activities welcome children as passengers from young ages in carriers, while driving a snowmobile or a husky team carries minimum ages or heights. Minimum height for being a passenger in a snowmobile starts at 140 cm, while driving requires a valid driving licence and a minimum age of 18. Minimum age for most husky safaris is 12, but this is mainly to ensure children will endure the duration of the safari. Talk to the operator if you wish to bring younger children to discover your options.
Driving your own snowmobile normally requires a valid driving licence and a minimum age; younger drivers ride as passengers. Guides brief you before you set off, and speeds are controlled on guided safaris.
Thermal base layers, mid layers, a windproof and waterproof outer shell, insulated boots, thick gloves, hat and a neck covering. Many activity operators provide thermal overalls and boots for the activity itself; overalls and boots can also be hired locally.
One big activity a day is the sweet spot. Two full safaris in a day usually means four transfers and a lot of time getting dressed — it looks efficient on paper and rarely is in practice.
The aurora is never guaranteed. It depends on solar activity and a clear sky, so we plan attempts as flexible evenings rather than fixed events, and keep a spare night where we can.
Operators occasionally amend or cancel activities for weather, temperature or conditions, and each has its own policy on rescheduling and refunds. Because you book directly, those terms are between you and the operator — we point out where they differ before you commit.
Many activities include pick-up from central accommodation; others meet at a base a short drive away. Journey times add up across a week, which is one reason a compact base like Levi suits an activity holiday.
